365 Days of Photography - Day #75

It was an early morning in the Kruger National Park where I came across an extremely misty section of the reserve. Shooting directly into the sun allowed me to set the shutter speed very high to create a very underexposed and silhouetted foreground.

365 Days of Photography - Day #74

Tortoises are always mocked because they are slow, and I must say that this guy had quite a bit of speed when he made it from one side of the enclosure to the other. It probably took him a speedy 10 minutes to move about 5 meters. He was however the grumpiest looking tortoise I have ever seen, and made for some really cool photographic opportunities.

365 Days of Photography - Day #73

I came home one day after work to see these awesome clouds forming at sunset. I climbed onto the roof to capture these unusual cloud formations.

365 Days of Photography - Day #72

One of my favorite photography techniques is to create panoramas. This particular shot was taken from the top of Table Mountain at sunset, looking down at the Clifton and Camp’s Bay beaches with Robben Island in the distance. This photo was made up of 5 shots, stitched together in Photoshop.

365 Days of Photography - Day #71

I spent some time at the Meerkat enclosure at the Montecasino Bird Gardens purely because you are able to get so close to them. This little guy was my favorite, as he seemed to pose endlessly for me. Towards the end of our little “photo shoot” he seemed to become quite curious of my actions.

365 Days of Photography - Day #70

Just outside the lodge’s restaurant at Ithala Game Reserve there is a small little dam with reeds all along the edge. There were a whole lot of weaver’s nests in the reeds and while trying to find a weaver to photograph, I found this beautiful little butterfly on a nearby plant. My favorite part of the shot is its powder blue eye.

365 Days of Photography - Day #69

I watched a man playing with his two dogs in the Lonehill Park in Johannesburg for a while. He would throw a plastic bottle into the dam and the two dogs would jump in and race each other to get it first. It didn’t matter who got it first because they always exited the water in the same way… Both dogs each had one end of the bottle.

365 Days of Photography - Day #68

I have always wanted to see a bear in the wild but for now I’ll have to settle for seeing them in a zoo. I had the opportunity to capture this big bear having a nap one afternoon in the Johannesburg Zoo.

365 Days of Photography - Day #67

On one particularly hot day in the Kruger National Park, I was able to get up close to a small pride of lions cooling off in the shade. They were probably about 5 or 6 meters away from the vehicle, which allowed me to get some great portrait shots.

365 Days of Photography - Day #66

In the middle of the Montecasino Bird Gardens in Johannesburg, there is a little area of grass where they have a couple of these Citron Crested Cockatoos. They aren’t in an enclosure like most of the other birds and they don’t really move away from their area. This cockatoo spent most of his time grooming his nails while I took a couple of shots of him.

365 Days of Photography - Day #64

On the same trip to the Kruger National Park, where I stayed at Camp Shawu, I stayed at another camp called Berg-En-Dal. On the way from the one camp to the other I crossed a small bridge where I found this small crocodile sun bathing.

365 Days of Photography - Day #63

Snakes scare and fascinate me at the same time. When they are behind glass or in an enclosure, they are so fascinating to look closely at. But in the wild or outside of a zoo or enclosure, they are just too scary. This Gaboon Adder was right up against the glass so I was able to get up close and personal.

During my holiday in Cape Town, I went to the Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront and managed to get a close up this Scorpion Fish in a tank.

365 Days of Photography - Day #61

I took this portrait shot of a Southern White-Faced Scops Owl in the Johannesburg Zoo on my last visit to the zoo. They are tiny little owls and so much fun to photograph.
