365 Days of Photography - Day #103

The Hamadrya’s Baboon is a strange species that I had never seen or heard of before until my recent visit to the Johannesburg Zoo. I later learnt that they are native to Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen and Saudi Arabia, among others.

365 Days of Photography - Day #102

When I first saw this Sungazer or Giant Girdled Lizard I mistook it for a Bearded Dragon but on closer inspection, I noticed that it definitely wasn’t. Apparently it isn’t common for them to breed in captivity and they are mostly exported from South Africa to other parts of the world, often illegally. Their current conservation state is vulnerable.

365 Days of Photography - Day #101

Meerkats are quite cute, I won’t lie. They spend a lot of time looking up at the sky, searching for birds of prey. There always seems to be at least one on the lookout while the others dig around looking for food or do their own thing.

365 Days of Photography - Day #100

I've made it to the big 100!! I can't believe it has already been 100 days since I started this blog. For Day #100, here is one of my personal favorites and best-selling stock image...

The rhino is possibly my favorite of the big 5 and I was so excited to see these two rhino resting their horns together because I knew it would make a cool shot. I managed to get this shot before they split up.

365 Days of Photography - Day #99

Until my recent visit to the Johannesburg Zoo, I was completely unaware that the Dwarf Crocodile was even something that existed. It was quite cute looking, as cute as a crocodile could get I guess and I was quite surprised to see how big his black eyes were.

The enclosure at the zoo where they keep the horses looks very much like it could be a farm in the background, instead of the zoo grounds. I took these two shots to try and get a farm feel without being on a farm.

365 Days of Photography - Day #97

After getting used to the early morning mist in the Kruger National Park, I was ready to try get something different and special the next day. I was lucky to get three completely different shots in the space of a few minutes in different parks of the reserve as we drove around.

365 Days of Photography - Day #96

While crossing a small concrete bridge in the Kruger National Park I found a few small terrapins swimming around in the river. After following this little guy’s activities for a while I was able to capture a shot of him climbing up a big block of concrete. It took him a little while, but he managed to get on top and he seemed pretty happy with himself.

365 Days of Photography - Day #95

In the middle of the Montecasino Bird Gardens in Johannesburg, there is a little area of grass where they have a couple of these Umbrella Crested Cockatoos. They look very similar to the Citron Crested Cockatoos, which I found very confusing. They aren’t in an enclosure like most of the other birds and they don’t really move away from their area. This particular cockatoo spent most of his time grooming his nails while I took a couple of shots of him.

365 Days of Photography - Day #94

During my holiday in Cape Town, I went to the Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront and managed to get up close and personal with a few penguins. I took a few portrait shots and these two were my favorite.

365 Days of Photography - Day #93

One of my favorite photography techniques is to create panoramas. This particular shot was taken from the top of Table Mountain, looking down at the city, Lion’s Head and Robben Island in the distance. This photo was made up of 10 shots, stitched together in Photoshop.

365 Days of Photography - Day #92

While visiting my conservationist friend in the Pilanesburg, we had to take a detour on one of our game drives to feed her boss's pets as she was away. This little kitten sat anxiously waiting for dinner while it was being prepared.

The mongoose lemur is a cute little creature native to Madagascar and I took a couple of shots of him while he has eating. This was my favorite shot as it made it look like he got a massive fright somehow.

I got up close and personal with a Crested Crane at the Montecasino Bird Gardens and managed to snap these two portrait shots. One of my favorite things about these birds is the pretty pale blue eyes that they have.
